There are six centers for clinical research in Switzerland. These Clinical Trial Units (CTUs) supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) are located at the university hospitals in Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich as well as at the cantonal hospital in St. Gallen.
The SCTO has the mandate to coordinate and enhance the cooperation between the centres. This includes the definition of quality standards for the conduct of studies, continued education and training as well as the coordination of multi-centre studies.
Moreover, the SCTO enhances the integration of national clinical research into international networks, and assists with the intermediation of studies. The SCTO is thereby the central cooperative platform for clinical research in Switzerland.
