Environmental Sustainability in Clinical Research: CO₂‑Footprint of Swiss Academic IITs

Project ID: RoR2026_016
Lead: Jean‑Marc Hoffmann (CTC Zürich) & Sandra Kohlmaier (DKF Basel)
Contacts:  sandra.kohlmaier@usb.ch, jean-marc.hoffmann@usz.ch
Contributors: tbd

Description:
This project establishes the first baseline carbon footprint of publicly funded academic clinical trials in Switzerland. Clinical trials contribute significantly to healthcare related emissions, yet Swiss academic trials currently lack systematic data and awareness. The project aims to generate evidence that can guide more sustainable clinical research practices nationally.

Key Objectives:

  • Map and benchmark emissions of Swiss academic clinical trials
  • Identify major emission hotspots
  • Compare Swiss estimates with UK academic trial data
  • Engage stakeholders to understand awareness, feasibility, and readiness for change
  • Develop practical recommendations for funders, investigators, and CRCs

Methods:

  • Trial selection of SNSF‑funded IICTs
  • Double data extraction from protocols and surveys
  • Use of NIHR carbon footprint methodology with Swiss emission factors
  • Hotspot analyses and benchmarking
  • Qualitative interviews with 15–25 stakeholders (investigators, ECs, CRC staff, SNSF, patient representatives) to shape feasible sustainability recommendations
